VICTORIA – The University of Calgary Dinos women's rugby team earned a pair of wins on the final day of the Victoria tournament, the second stop on the Canada West Rugby 7s circuit.
The host Victoria Vikes captures the tournament held at Wallace Field. The Vikes finished a perfect 5-0 on the weekend, capturing the Victoria tournament title for back-to-back Canada West Rugby 7s tournament wins this season. The UBC Thunderbirds finished second with a 4-1 mark, while Calgary and the Lethbridge Pronghorns each ended with a 3-2 record. The Alberta Pandas and Trinity Western Spartans finished the tournament at 2-3, while Victoria – Blue ended at 1-4 and the Fraser Valley Cascades 0-5.
Beginning the day with inter-pool play, the Dinos defeated the Victoria – Blue squad, 7-5, with
Taejah Thompson's conversion being the difference-maker to send the Dinos to the fifth-place game.
Calgary shutout Trinity Western, 41-0, to secure fifth place.
Leah Brunner,
Alison Kernick, and
Taylor Price each had two tries in the victory.
UBC's Savannah Bauder led the field with 10 tries over the tournament, while also adding four converts. Victoria's Krista Scurfield tallied seven tries, while the Thunderbirds' Piper Logan finished with six to round out the top three scorers.
The 2022 Canada West Rugby 7s series will make one final stop, heading to Vancouver, B.C. as the Thunderbirds host the final tournament of the season, Feb. 25-26.
