CALGARY – Sophie Lalor scored 24 seconds into overtime to secure a 2-1 win for the No. 9 Saskatchewan Huskies over the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team on Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena.
It was the third straight meeting between the two teams to need more than 60 minutes to find a winner. The Dinos now sit at 6-10-1 on the season, while the Huskies improve to 10-5-2.
After some early scoring chances for both sides on special teams, Saskatchewan struck first at the 13:37 mark of the first period when they took advantage of a turnover deep in the Calgary zone. Taylor Wilkinson picked up the puck behind the goal line and dished it to Kelsey Hall, who was wide open in front for her second goal of the year.
The Huskies carried the momentum in the second period and nearly made it 2-0 with the best scoring chance of the frame by Kenda Zuchotzki, who managed to get a shot past Dinos netminder
Gabriella Durante, but not the post.
During the latter half of the second period, Calgary generated more chances but were unable to get the puck past Saskatchewan goaltender Camryn Drever.
Nevertheless, the Dinos came out strong in the third period with two quick shots on net within the first minute, clearly eager to get on the scoreboard.
Calgary was rewarded for their efforts when rookie forward
Sydney Mercier tied the game. Mercier won an offensive zone faceoff and got the puck back to fellow first-year
Keagan Goulet, who snapped the puck from the point towards the net. Mercier read the play well and drove the net and tucked home the rebound for her third goal of the campaign.
"Our coach told us during the second intermission that we are still in this game and we just have to put as much pressure on them and put as many shots on net as we can," fourth-year forward
Elizabeth Lang explained. "We were in striking distance of them and we just had to battle hard."
With the score tied at the end of regulation, the Huskies ended the game quickly in the fourth period.
After Zuchotzki failed to put the puck in off a breakaway, Lalor backed up her teammates and knocked the puck over the line to light the lamp and end the game. The goal was Lalor's sixth of the season.
Durante notched 13 saves in the defeat, while Drever made 27 stops to pick up the win.
The Dinos and Huskies meet again on Saturday at Father David Bauer Arena with a 6 p.m. puck drop.
