Fourth-quarter push sends Dinos past Horns

LETHBRIDGE – Heading into a matchup against the University of Calgary Dinos, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns would see their four-game winning streak come to end at the hands of a 69-61 loss to the Dinos.

A back-and-forth affair for the first three quarters, the Dinos would limit the 'Horns to only four points in the final six minutes of the third to enter the fourth quarter with 49-48 lead.

Calgary then came out firing in the final quarter, embarking on a 10-0 run in the opening four minutes. A stingy defensive effort by the Dinos would see the 'Horns struggle with taking care of the basketball.

Down by ten at 58-48, Haily Weaver provided the spark for the Pronghorns, connecting on a mid-range jumper after being forced off the three-point line. From there, consecutive Pronghorn baskets from Abby Graves and Millay Johnson would force a Calgary timeout.

A 5-0 Dinos run following Damian Jennings' timeout would restore the ten-point Calgary lead. A Danielle Nadeau three pointer with a minute remaining wasn't enough, as the Dinos snapped the Pronghorns' four game winning streak.

With the victory, the Calgary improves to 7-2 on the year while Lethbridge falls to 5-4.

The Pronghorns were led by 14 points and six rebounds from Jessica Haenni, while Kyra Collier added 10 points and four rebounds. Millay Johnson posted an impressive eight assists, while also contributing six points offensively.

The Dinos were led by a 21-point, seven-rebound performance from Annacy Palmer, while Louise Rouse added 17 points and eight rebounds. Amelie Collin would record 11 rebounds, while adding three points.

The Pronghorns jumped out to a fast start, as the home side opened a 7-2 lead thanks to strong play by their guards. The Dinos responded with a 15-7 run to close the quarter, thanks efficient shooting from beyond the arc. Calgary connected on three of their six three pointers. Calgary entered the second quarter with a three-point lead, 17-14.

The script would flip in the second quarter as the Dinos cooled down form beyond the arc, shooting only 2 of 9 from three. The Pronghorns found their rhythm on offense, shooting 9 of 15 in the quarter. It was Calgary that would outrebound the 'Horns in the quarter, securing four more boards, all coming on the offensive glass. However, a stingy defensive effort allowed Lethbridge to secure four steals, which they converted to five fast-break points. The Pronghorns would take a 35-34 lead into halftime.

The majority of the third quarter was controlled by the Pronghorns, with the 'Horns playing with the lead until the final 47 seconds. A persistent effort by Calgary saw the visitors fight back from a lead as large as six in the quarter, as Lethbridge mustered only four points in the final six minutes of the quarter. The teams would head into the final quarter with the Dinos leading by one, 49-48.

The Pronghorns were unable to recover from an early 10-0 Calgary run as Lethbridge would fall to their provincial rivals.

The Pronghorns and Dinos will face off again Saturday night, with tipoff set for 5 p.m. at the 1st Choice Savings Center in Lethbridge.
