CALGARY – The University of Calgary men's volleyball team is back home in Calgary this weekend for their first home games of the season, taking on the UBC Okanagan Heat.
Both Friday's and Saturday's games will start at 5 p.m. and will be held at Jack Simpson Gym.
FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
1. SEASON SO FAR – The Dinos are 0-4 after a tough draw to start the conference schedule and will be looking to notch their first win for their first set of conference wins on home turf, while UBCO comes into the weekend at 1-3 and coming off a weekend split with Manitoba at home.
2. BUILT LIKE A BRICK WALL – Calgary is currently ranked fifth overall in the conference in blocks and has three players in the top 10, individually. The third year
Jackson Meier is ranked fourth with 1.21 blocks/set, followed by fourth year
Lincoln Baines (ranking fifth) with a 1.21 average, and second year
Zach Christensen (tenth) with a 1.00 average. Notably, Baines also ranked first overall last season in blocks with a 1.55 average per set.
3. HE CAN HIT TOO – Veteran middle
Lincoln Baines is also currently ranked fourth in the conference in hitting percentage with a .409 percentage, which is close to where he finished in the rankings last year, ending up third overall in 2021 with a .414 percentage.
4. DINOS CAN HANDLE THE HEAT – In their last meeting in the Dino Cup this year, Calgary won 3-1. Calgary also defeated the Heat 3-2 last year when they met in the playoffs and ended up in the bronze medal match, while the Heat fell in the first round.
5. KILLER INSTINCT – Calgary second-year outside hitter
Erik Godwin currently leads his team in kills, notching 51 so far this season, making him well on track to surpass the 81 he finished with last season.
