LANGLEY, B.C. – Brodie Hofer finished with a game-high 15 kills to lead the Trinity Western Spartans to a 3-0 win over the Calgary Dinos men's volleyball team late Friday from the Langley Events Centre.
The 25-18, 25-23, 25-19 win for the Spartans keeps their undefeated start to the season intact, while the loss drop the Dinos to 0-3.
TWU hit .303 for the match, while the Dinos also had a nice final two frames on the attack, finishing hitting .285 down the stretch.
Louis Kuntsmann and
Liam Kuppe tied for the team lead for Calgary Friday with nine kills apiece. Rookie setter
Anders Bouck dished out a season-high 23 assists in the three-setter.
A strong defensive effort carried the Spartans in the first set. John Obi and Henry Rempel teamed up for a block to create some separation at 14-10. Rempel then got hot late on offence, with the final two kills to give the home team the 1-0 lead.
The Dinos were much crisper in the second. A kill by
Erik Godwin capped a 7-0 run that gave Calgary a 12-7 lead early.
Jackson Meier added a kill before teaming up with
Tyler Funk for a block to make it 18-12, but the Spartans continued to battle and tied things up at 20-all late. Kuppe added two of his kills in crunch time to tie things up at 23-23, before TWU was able to do just enough to claim the very tight second set.
Calgary continued to battle, but five of Trinity Western's 13 aces came in the third set to finish off the sweep in the opener.
The Spartans and Dinos will square off again Saturday night for an 8 p.m. MT first serve.
