Dinos defence delivers to earn sweep over Heat

CALGARY – The Dinos defence took centre stage as Calgary defeated the UBC-Okanagan Heat, 91-61, at the Jack Simpson Gym Saturday evening.

Limiting the Heat to just 18 points across the 2nd and 3rd quarter combined, Calgary flipped a 21-16 lead by UBCO early in the second into a 38-point Calgary cushion in the fourth in a completely dominanting performance by the home squad.

Spencer Roberts continued his torrid start to his Dinos career, tallying 18 points, six rebounds, and three blocks in just 16 minutes of action. The Northern Arizona University transfer was instrumental for the Dinos in protecting the rim, as Calgary limited the Heat to 18 points in the paint after surrendering 44 on Friday night.

Second-year guard Aidan Smith finished with 17 points and six reboundsm part of the teams concerted effort to control the glass.

"We're a smaller group this year, with some injuries to our big guys. We've really had to work on team rebounding and working as a unit," said Smith post game.

The party at the Jack took full effect in the 3rd quarter with the Calgary's 12 blocks leading to fast-break run outs behind a roaring crowd. Third-year guard Jackson Bayles rewarded Roberts and the Dinos frontcourt with countless no-look, behind the back, and drop-off dimes to the rim runners.

After failing to match their first quarter scoring output in the 2nd and 3rd quarter combined, the Heat registered 23 points in the fourth quarter. They will look to maintain that scoring touch next week as they host the Brandon Bobcats in their home opener.

For Calgary, another chapter is set to be written in the Battle of Alberta, as they visit the Golden Bears next weekend. Catch all the action next week on Canada West TV.
