CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball team survived an opening night scare from the UBC Okanagan Heat and held on for a 92-88 win on Friday evening at the Jack Simpson Gym.
After falling behind 71-59 at the end of the third quarter the Heat stormed back in the fourth coming within three points of the Dinos with just four minutes to play. Second-year guard Amélie Collin, who finished with 13 points, four steals and three assists made a clutch three in the final two minutes. Collin would go on to seal the win for the Dinos, going four-of-four from the free-throw line down the stretch.
"Honestly, I was just staying focused on what we wanted to achieve, we wanted to get the win, I was just focusing on that," said Collin. "I was confident in my team and just went out and played. Looking ahead to tomorrow we have to improve our defence, trust in one another, and stick to the game plan."
The offence was the story early on in Friday's game as both teams looked to be in mid-season form from the opening tip. However, it was the Heat who went on a 12-0 run with six minutes to play, taking the lead 39-37 with 3:51 to go in the second quarter. The Heat offence was led by new addition Sofia Ainsa Lluch and Jaeli Ibbetson who finished with 22 and 21 points respectively. The Heat would finish the half up 49-47.
The Dinos looked like a different team defensively in the third quarter as they played with tremendous energy throughout the frame.
Pollyanna Storie provided great minutes for Calgary off the bench and sparked her team offensively in the third, helping the Dinos outscore the Heat 24-10 in the quarter.
The fourth quarter saw the Heat surge back late. Lluch made a big three with 1:08 seconds left in the game, after she had made several tough shots to get it there, closing the gap 88-84 in favour of the Dinos. The Heat were finally within striking distance however, Lluch's efforts were not enough as the steady hand of Collin was enough to close out the game.
With the win the Dinos begin the season at 1-0, while the Heat fall to 0-1.
Both teams will face each other again on Saturday evening. The game will tip off at 4 p.m. at the Jack Simpson Gym.
