Shorthanded Dinos fall to TWolves

Prince George, B.C. – The UNBC Timberwolves connected on nearly 70-percent of its shots in the fourth quarter to turn a tie game heading into the final frame into a 74-67 win over the University of Calgary Dinos men's basketball team late Saturday from inside the Northern Sport Centre.

The Dinos (4-4) came into the game missing a pair of starters and lost two more of its starting five early on as they continue to battle the injury bug.

Noah Wharton, who just got off the injured list himself, led the way for Calgary with 18 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Ezeoah Santiago (15 points), Parker Johnstone (13) and Javier Ramos-Izquierdo (11) all also scored in double figures, while Jackson Bayles just missed a double-double with nine points and nine boards.

Spencer Ledoux finished with a team-high 16 points for the TWolves, while Fareed Shittu was big down low late for UNBC with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Knotted up at 47 in a defensive battle heading into the final frame, UNBC found a mismatch down low and went to work, with Shittu getting six points, four rebounds and a key assist of a triple on a second-chance play to spark the home squad down the stretch.

Despite the lack of healthy players, the Dinos hung tough. Wharton earned a trip to the free-throw line and tied that game at 56 with 4:04 to play, but the Timberwolves responded with a 13-4 run to claim their largest lead of the game in the final minute of play.

Calgary stays on the road next weekend, heading to Lethbridge for a pair of games, starting Friday at 8 p.m. Meanwhile, UNBC is now off until the New Year, returning to action Jan. 6 with a weekend series against Manitoba at home.
