Golden Bears come to campus for weekend tilt

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos men's volleyball team (3-5) are back home this week to host the No. 1 University of Alberta Golden Bears (7-1) at the Jack Simpson Gym.

Friday's game will start at 6 p.m. while Saturday's game will start at 7:45 p.m.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

1. WHO WILL BREAK THEIR STREAK?
– Although having a bit of an up-and-down start, Calgary is currently at 3-5 on the season and they have finally found their stride, resulting in being on a three-game winning streak, while Alberta enters at 7-1 and on a seven-game winning streak.

2. RIVALRY RENEWED – The Dinos and Golden Bears certainly have plenty of history between their two programs. The two squads played eight total times last season alone, splitting the regular-season series before Alberta topped Calgary in the U SPORTS Championship semifinal. This weekend's matchup will serve as the lone Battle of Alberta in volleyball this season with the return to regular scheduling.

3. OFFENCE VS DEFENCE – Checking in on some of the conference statistics, Alberta is ranked first in three offensive areas: points (16.23 average per set), assists (11.57/set), and kills (12.26/set). Calgary, on the other hand, is ranked second in CW in blocks with a 2.39 per set, fueling the age-old debate of if a strong offence is better than a strong defence.

4. GOLDEN BEARS TO WATCH – Alberta's Cam Kern is ranked first in assists with an average of 10 per set while his teammate Jordan Canham is ranked third in service aces with an 0.72 average per set and a total of 31. Canham also leads his team in kills, notching 145 in the season thus far.

5. DINOS TO WATCH – Calgary's Louis Kunstmann is currently ranked first in hitting percentage with a .463 percentage, while teammate Lincoln Baines is second in blocks with an average of 1.23 per set. Fellow teammate Liam Kuppe leads his team in kills with a total of 76.
