CALGARY - The University of Calgary Dinos men's volleyball team fell 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-20) to the UBC-Okanagan Heat in their home opener Friday night at Jack Simpson Gym.
The loss puts the Dinos at 0-5 on the season thus far, while the Heat move to 2-3.
The Dinos came out for the first time this season in Jack Simpson Gym full of energy, staring the match off with a kill from second year outside hitter
Erik Godwin that would set the dominating tone for the rest of the first set.
However, the Heat took their time boiling in the last few points of the first set, rallying from a 20-12 deficit to win in extras and take the first set.
The start of the second set was more of a teeter totter match, with the teams going point for point.
But, again, the Heat notched were able to string a few in a row in the latter half of the set to end the second set on top.
The Dinos did not want to go down without a fight, starting off strong in the third set and making fantastic blocks.
Nevertheless, UBCO battled back and the teams would go point for point again, but ultimately the Heat ended up on top.
Dinos second-year middle blocker
Louis Kunstmann lead his team in kills for the night with eight to go with one service ace, while Renn Petryk lead UBCO in kills with 14.
"For our home opener, we had different plans," Kunstmann said. "It felt good at the beginning of the first set, but we ended up losing that set. It felt like we were up by a lot and we had a good rhythm and all of a sudden we kind of broke down and we just didn't find out rhythm after that which was very disappointing.
"Tomorrow we just have to play our game, be a bit more loose, have more fun, and be more aggressive. As soon as it's not going great, we can't loose our rhythm and we need to bring a bit more fire to the court tomorrow"
Both teams are back in action tomorrow for a rematch inside Jack Simpson Gym. First serve is at 5 p.m.
