CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer team ended their regular season with a 1-0 win against the University of Alberta Golden Bears Sunday afternoon at McMahon Stadium.
With the win, Calgary finishes the regular season at 6-5-3, while Alberta finishes at 5-2-7.
The match started off with both teams playing keep away and trying to thread the needle.
It was not until 17th minute that the game started to lean in favour of the Dinos when they had their first solid attempt on net starting from a through ball that found its way to
Koen Schoffner who was the top of the 18, but he could not find the back of the net.
Eventually, Calgary's efforts would pay off in the 35th minute with a give-and-go going down the left side of the field. Rookie
Felipe Raed Di Bari weaved his way into the box, where he crossed the ball to an open
Kundai Dziwa who simply had to tap the ball in to make it 1-0, Dinos.
Calgary continued to dominate and control the ball in the second half, but Alberta was able to sneak in a few attempts on net.
In the 77th minute, the Golden Bears had a good attempt to even the score when they sent a long through ball down the field, but Dinos netminder
Liam Hunter played it aggressive and punched the ball away before it could get to the strikers' feet.
For the rest of the match, the Dinos played very defensively to hold on to their lead and solidify their win.
"It was a good opportunity to get six points before the playoffs and go into the playoffs with a lot of confidence with two games where we performed well back-to-back, which was definitely needed,"
Decklin Mahmi said. "In the last two games, we showed that we are definitely clinical in the box and finishing our chances. We just need to carry that into the playoffs and keep playing well. We put on immaculate performances (this weekend), and just bringing the energy into the playoffs is what we need to do."
The Dinos clinched third place after yesterday's contest, and will play their first playoff match against the second place team in the Pacific division on October 29th. The Golden Bears will play the third place team in the Pacific division on the same day.
