REGINA – Behind four second-period goals, the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team shook off their offensive rust from the night before for a convincing 4—2 win over the Regina Cougars Saturday afternoon from The Co-operators Centre.
That gives the Dinos the split on the weekend and moves them to 3-5 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 2-4.
Regina got the board first Saturday after a great individual effort by Jadyn Kushniruk, going unassisted just before the first intermission.
After the break, the Dinos got things rolling and could not be stopped in the second.
Alli Borrow got things going with a power play goal not even two minutes into the second to tie things up, with
Sydney Mercier and
Keagan Goulet earning assists on the play.
Goulet and Borrow then traded roles later in the period when the veteran collected the puck along the boards and found the rookie across ice, where Goulet wristed one over the shoulder of the keeper to give the Dinos a 2-1 lead with just over six minutes left in the frame.
Brooke Dennett made it a two-goal advantage for the Scarlet & Gold less than two minutes later after some great passing saw the Calgary product beat the keeper and give her hometown team a 3-1 advantage.
With just over a minute left in the second,
Elizabeth Lang added a shorthanded goal on a great feed from Dennett and
Kate Wagner to make it 4-1 for Calgary after 40 minutes.
Regina was able to get one back midway through the third when Kaitlyn Gilroy was able to find the back of the net, but that was all
Gabriella Durante would allow, racking up 34 saves in the win.
The Dinos now have a weekend off from competition before returning to the ice Nov. 4-5 at UBC. Meanwhile, the Cougars will travel to Alberta for a weekend series with the Pandas.
