CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's rugby team will head north this weekend for the 2022 Canada West Final Four, starting Thursday.
Calgary will open things against Victoria at 1 p.m. Sunday's action starts at 11 a.m. with the bronze-medal game before the CW Championship is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m.
This year's final four will be hosted by Alberta, with all games scheduled to be played at Foote Field.
FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
HISTORY CLASS – Calgary will be looking for its fourth conference championship in program history, after going back-to-back-to-back from 2016-18. The Dinos settled for silver in 2019 before returning from COVID last year and bringing home bronze.
REGULAR SEASON REWIND – The Dinos finished the 2022 regular season with a 3-3 record, good for third in the CW standings. This year's squad was one play away from finishing even higher, but Lethbridge was able to score a try at the buzzer in a 15-10 result for the Horns back on Oct. 7.
SERIES HISTORY – Calgary and Victoria have plenty of history against one another, both in regular and postseason play. The Vikes claimed this year's Jenny Vincent Memorial Game, 42-12, from Victoria. That marks the third straight win in the series for UVic to cut the Dinos lead in the all-time history to 8-5 in conference play. Calgary also owns the head-to-head record in postseason play, 5-0, with three of those five wins coming in the gold-medal game.
WOMEN'S WORLD CUP – A pair of former Dinos are currently in New Zealand competing with Team Canada at the 2022 Women's Rugby World Cup. DaLeaka Menin (2013-17) and Emily Tuttosi (2013-17) are both currently overseas with their home country. The duo has helped lead Canada to a 2-0 start to this year's tournament, posting a 41-5 win over Japan in the opener before a 22-12 victory over Italy this past Sunday. In fact, in the win over Japan, Tuttosi scored three tries and was named the player of the match. The Souris, Man. native is the leading scorer of this year's tournament thus far with five tries. Canada closes out pool play Sunday against the USA.
QUOTABLE – "It's a matter of putting things together, and building momentum towards playoffs, in that playoff environment anyone can win. We're confident that we can go there and show the rest of the Canada West some Dinos Rugby." – Dinos head coach
