Kobza delivers three points for Dinos

SASKATOON – The captain delivered for the University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer team on Sunday in Saskatoon.

Eryk Kobza scored in both the 77th and 81st minutes to lift the Dinos to a massive 3-2 win over the Saskatchewan Huskies. The result keeps Calgary in the hunt for a home playoff date heading into the final weekend of the regular season.

As the Huskies looked to continue their late-season playoff push, they opened the game up by applying the pressure early. Kevin Garic netted his first goal of the season just eight minutes into the game to give the Huskies an early lead.

Both the Dinos and the Dogs traded opportunities but neither team was able to capitalize until Gianmarco Plenzik found the back of the net off a free kick just above the box in the 32nd minute.

The second half was going back and forth when the Huskies thought they found the back of the net to take the lead, but the Dinos defender stopped the ball on the goal line and kicked it out of harm's way.

The second half was evenly matched until the Huskies captain Aaron Hidalgo-Mazzei found the back of the net in the 74th minute on a beautiful free kick bending it up and around Dinos goalkeeper Jake Ruschkowski.

The lead did not last long as Kobza tapped one home off an incredible pass from Victor Gouttin.

Just four minutes later Kobza struck once again beating Slopinski to give the Dinos the lead for good.

Ruschkowski stopped two of four shots on target for Calgary.  Slopinski got his 13th start of the season in net for the Dogs stopping three of six shots he faced.

The Dinos will host their final two regular season games next weekend. Action gets underway against the MacEwan Griffins on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 2:15 p.m., followed by the season finale and Seniors' Day against the Alberta Golden Bears at 2:15 on Sunday, Oct. 23 at Dinosaur Field.

The Huskies head into the final regular season weekend in must-win territory and will need some help to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2019-2020. The Huskies' final regular season game is against the Lethbridge Pronghorns in Lethbridge on Oct. 22.
