Dinos clinch playoff berth in emphatic style

CALGARY – Four players found the back of the net as the University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team cruised to a 4-0 win over UBC-Okanagan Friday afternoon from Dinosaur Field.

The win is a big one for Calgary, as they now sit at 7-4-2 on the season and officially clinch a playoff berth. UBCO moves to 3-7-3 overall.

Alison Pedersen got the scoring started for Calgary in the 11th minute, following an assist from Rachel Barlow – her national leading 10th on the season. Barlow took a corner kick from the right corner, sending it across the net to the back post. Pederson perfectly timed it up, one-timing the ball mid-flight and hammering it back across the goal to the side netting to make it 1-0.

Ella Djuranic scored a powerful goal in the 21st minute to bring the Dinos up 2-0. Jayden Berg created a turnover deep in Heat territory, brought the ball up and around defenders before passing off to Djuranic, who took the shot just beating the keeper.

Barlow then added her second point of the game as she scored her sixth goal of the season on a free kick at the 37:55 mark. The third-year forward chipped the ball from about 20 yards out up and over a cluster in the box, placing it perfectly in the upper 90 far post for a beauty of a goal.

The Dinos added one more before halftime. Sofia DiGiacomo sent a long through ball behind the UBCO defence where Erica Mysko was able to use her speed and get a foot to it just before the onrushing keeper. Mysko made one move and was able to tap the ball into the empty net to make it 4-0 just three minutes before the break.

After the break, both teams were able to create chances, including a dangerous one by Yvonne Manwaring in the 83rd minute, but Caley Leask was up to the task for one of her three saves on the night in the shutout win.

Molly Race finished with a total of nine saves on the afternoon for the Heat, bringing her overall tally to 43 this season.

"We lacked intent in the last games and emphasized in training this week what was important to get results and play a 90-minute game," Dinos co-head coach Alex Valerio said. "This put us in a good position going into playoffs.

"We go one game at a time from here on out."

The Dinos will play the TRU Wolfpack on Sunday October 16th at noon back on Dinosaur Field for the last game of the regular season.

The Heat will take a road trip over to Prince George, BC to play the UNBC Timberwolves Sunday afternoon.
