No. 2 Spartans rally to take down No. 10 Dinos

LANGLEY, B.C. – One week after knocking off the top-ranked team in the country, the University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team suffered a 3-1 come-from-behind defeat on the road against the second-ranked Trinity Western Spartans Friday night from Chase Office Field.

Rachel Barlow found the back of the net just 14 seconds into the game to give the Dinos (5-3-1) the very early lead. Calgary would carry that advantage into halftime, but Makenna Dieterich scored in the 49th and 63rd minutes before Maddie Melnychuk added an insurance goal late to give TWU (7-1-1) the win.

Calgary opened the scoring their opening possession mere seconds into the match. Dinos forward Erica Mysko ripped a close-range shot across the face of goal. Spartans keeper Hannah Miller made the diving save, but Barlow was there for the tap-in finish for her fifth goal of the year.

That marked the first goal allowed by TWU in over month and just the third all season as Calgary quickly had momentum and the early lead.

The Dinos weren't satisfied with the lead, continuing to play aggressively as they carried that 1-0 lead into the break.

TWU was able to even things up shortly into the second half though, as Dieterich tied the match for the Spartans in the 49th minute. Tilly James went up the right side of the pitch and sent a square ball through traffic to the far side of the box where Dieterich hit the open net for her second goal of the season and a 1-1 tie.

Dieterich got her second of the night in the 63rd minute. Charity Field got space on the left side of the park and found Dietrich in the centre of the box, where she beat her defender and sent the ball past the Dinos keeper and into the right side of the net to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead.

The Spartans Melnychuk got TWU the insurance goal in the 85th minute. Melnychuk got her second of the season when she converted a pass in the box from Sophie Crowther to give TWU a 3-1 lead with just over five minutes remaining.

Miller was credited with three saves in the win for the Spartans, while Caley Leask made six saves in the loss.

TWU outshot Calgary 13-8 in total shots and 9-4 in shots on goal. The Spartans also had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

Up next, Calgary continues its four-game swing out west with a Sunday contest at Fraser Valley scheduled for a 2 p.m. MT kick off. Meanwhile, the Spartans will host UNBC on Saturday for a 5 p.m. game.
