Dinos second-half surge delivers once again

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos men's basketball team used yet another second half defence to offence run to power past the MacEwan University Griffins, 95-75 Friday night from Jack Simpson Gym. After a tremendous first half of play by the Griffins and a furious 9-0 run to open the fourth quarter, the Dinos asserted control and cruised to the win.

First-year forward Javier Ramos-Yzquierdo put together seven-straight points for the Dinos during the decisive run, hitting two big buckets and finding Mason Foreman in transition to swing the game back in favor of the Dinos (6-3). The run continued to a 16-3 advantage, culminating in the 20-point victory.

In the opening half, the Griffins (0-9) shot 57-percent from the field, building a six-point lead in the first quarter. Fourth-year Mason Hunter matched his season high in the first quarter alone, ending the night with 27 points on 50% shooting from the field.

Leveraging their length and footspeed in the frontcourt, the Dinos brought a more switch-heavy defence into the contest. Early in the game some miscommunications and breakdowns led to easy Griffins' points. Any semblance of growing pains however, lasted just 20 minutes.

"The switches is a new thing we're trying to build on" said second-year Dinos guard Jeffery Tezo. "The first couple minutes was kind of hard because we just started with it, but we tightened it up and will look to be even better tomorrow".

Four Dinos finished with more than 15 points on the night, with the team shooting 55-percent from the field. Foreman's team high 25 points were facilitated by Tezo, who piled up nine assists on the night while showcasing his two-man game with the fourth-year all-star.

The Griffins will look to build on their showing and contain the potent Dinos attack tomorrow at 7 p.m. MST on Canada West TV, presented by CO-OP.
