VICTORIA – The University of Calgary Dinos were within striking distance at half, but the University of Victoria Vikes pulled away after the break and earned a 43-10 victory on Thursday night at Wallace Field.
With the win, the Vikes have now secured back-to-back wins in the Jenny Vincent Memorial Game for the first time in the 11-year history of the event. Victoria had won the inaugural match, before the Dinos claimed the next eight. Vincent was the driving force behind obtaining varsity status for the Dinos women's rugby program. She joined the program when it was a competitive club in the late 1990s and worked tirelessly to meet the necessary standards to elevate the program to the varsity level. As a coach, she also led the Vikes in the inaugural season of U SPORTS rugby play.
Victoria opened the scoring in the game's second minute. After receiving a pass, Larah Wright took off down the left side of the field, shaking off the Dinos' efforts to tackle her on the way to the end zone to put the Vikes on the board. Making her season debut after playing for Team Canada at the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Tournament, Renee Gonzalez barreled up the left side of Wallace Field to the in-goal area for the Vikes' second try of the day.
The Dinos got on the board in the 17th minute with a try by
Berlyn Seselja, followed by a successful
Patricia Lively convert. A penalty goal later in the first half by Lively pulled the Dinos within two.
The Vikes forward pack powered through the Calgary defence and over the goal line with Ada Okonkwo carrying the ball, ending the Dinos' scoring run and extending the Vikes' lead to seven at half.
Victoria would score 26 unanswered points in the second half to make the final 43-10.
The Dinos will now travel to the lower mainland of B.C. and face the UBC Thunderbirds on Sunday, Oct. 3.
