Dinos edged in close three-set battle

CALGARY – A tight matchup against their crosstown rivals got away from the University of Calgary Dinos women's volleyball team on Friday night, as they fell 3-0 (27-29, 22-25, 14-25) to the Mount Royal University Cougars at Kenyon Court.

The lead did not expanded past two points until late in the second set when Mount Royal started to assert themselves offensively. Every time the Cougars went ahead, the Dinos responded – until a three-point run at the end of the middle set.

Regan Ingram and Kenzie Vaandering had nine and six kills respectively to lead the Dinos. Haley Roe's 13 kills were a game-high, while Madison Marshall also had 11 for the Cougars.

Calgary faltered in the third set and sees their record slip to 2-5, while Mount Royal earns their third Crowchild Classic win of the season and goes to 5-2.

Back-and-forth throughout the opening set, the Dinos staved off three set points before a Roe kill and an attack error finally ended it.

Tied at 18 in the late stages of the second set, Mount Royal looked to pull away following a 4-0 run, but Calgary once again fought back with Stella Reins operating at the service line. The Cougars moved back ahead and took a 2-0 lead with a big final effort from Faye Murray.

Mount Royal put the game out of reach halfway through the third set with the only extended run of the evening on eight consecutive points.

Some impressive play at the net saw Calgary out block Mount Royal 6-4. The Cougars finished with a .263 hitting percentage, while the Dinos struggled at .094.

The volleyball edition of the Crowchild Classic wraps up on Saturday night with a 7 p.m. start from Kenyon Court. CanadaWest.tv presented by Co-op will have live streaming coverage.
