Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | Lance Doucet; Dinos Communications

Hazelden's career-best night spoiled

CALGARY – Outside hitter Hamish Hazelden's massive 29 kill performance was not enough for the University of Calgary Dinos men's volleyball team as they dropped a five-set battle (17-25, 25-23, 25-21, 17-25, 11-15) to the Mount Royal University Cougars on Friday night at Kenyon Court.

Hazelden smashed his previous career-high in kills (21 on Jan. 18 vs. Brandon) and was the driving force, along with a pair of second-set substitutions, as the Dinos took a 2-1 sets lead heading into the fourth. Mount Royal showed great composure and rallied to win the final two sets.

Chris Byam led the Cougars with 26 kills and was supported by Max Haronga who ended the evening with 12 of his own.

It is Calgary's third straight setback as they fall to 4-3 in conference play, while Mount Royal has now won two of their last three games to improve to 2-5.

After the Cougars controlled the first set, the home side carried their strong play into the second and grabbed a 17-8 advantage. Dinos head coach Rod Durrant made a pair of changes, bringing Jacob Reid and Erik Godwin into the match, and shifted the momentum. Calgary battled back to take the second set and jumped out to an early lead in the third.

While the Dinos closed out the third set, the Cougars began to claw back. A six-point run in the fourth set helped Mount Royal push the action into a fifth set, where a great run at the service line by Keal Prince gave the Cougars the win.

Both teams ended the night with solid hitting statistics. Mount Royal posted a .303 hitting percentage, while Calgary finished at .273.

The Dinos and Cougars face off for the final time this season on Saturday night with a 5 p.m. start at Kenyon Court. CanadaWest.tv presented by Co-op will have live streaming coverage.
