CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's volleyball team took down the MacEwan University Griffins, winning 3-1 (19-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-16) Saturday evening at the Jack Simpson Gym.
The Dinos improve to .500 with the weekend sweep, while the Griffins are still in search of their first victory.
After a dominant Griffins performance, MacEwan would claim the opening set.
That first set loss wouldn't stymie the Dinos as they jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the second set. That strong offensive performance would continue as they eventually took a 21-9 lead over the Griffins. MacEwan made a strong push down the stretch, closing things to 22-15, but it wasn't enough as the Dinos would claim the set 25-17 and tie the game at 1-1.
Tied 14-14 midway through the third, the Dinos were able to catch a wave of momentum and finish the frame on an 11-3 run to take the lead overall.
The beginning of the fourth set mirrored the third set with back-and-forth play early. But, after a 4-4 start, the Dinos would pull away with a 12-6 lead. The Griffins would work their way back within three points, but the Dinos would go on a 5-0 run to make the set 20-15, and eventually win the game 25-16.
"We really capitalized on our serves," first-year setter
Evelyn Kath said on the adjustment following the opening set. "I thought we started serving more aggressively, we started communicating more with each other on the court and then figured out where their weak points were and capitalized on those (chances)."
Kath was a key player in the Dinos success, recording 32 assists, seven digs, four service aces and three kills.
"I felt super supported by my teammates; they were putting the ball away, I was getting good passes, (which) made it easy to execute."
Michela Alongi contributed 16 digs to the Dinos win, while
Kenzie Vaandering and
Sophie Reed combined for 21 kills, six service aces and five blocks.
Griffins' Mariah Bereziuk tallied eight digs, six kills, two blocks and two service aces for her group.
The Dinos will travel north on Friday November 26th for their first meeting between the University of Alberta Pandas at the Saville Community Sports Centre, while the Griffins will play their next game at home on Friday November 26th against the Mount Royal University Cougars.
