LETHBRIDGE – In a rematch of their season-opener, the University of Calgary Dinos fell 22-14 to the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on Friday night.
Despite the Dinos scoring the first and last tries of the game, 22 Pronghorns points in between propelled the home side to a victory in their final home game of the year.
The Dinos found early success pushing into Pronghorn territory thanks to a relentless effort by their back row. This led to a scoring play thanks to an efficient Dino scrum that saw the ball pushed out to second-year wing
Kate Knight. A
Berlyn Seselja conversion saw the Dinos take a 7-0 lead in the 4th minute.
The Pronghorns would bounce back from their slow start off the backs of strong play by their locks. Pushing towards the try line, fourth-year backrow Gwen Fillinger scored the home team's first try of the game at the 19th minute. A Catilin Sears conversion would see the game tied 7-7.
At the 33rd minute, an Abby Neudorf penalty kick gave the Pronghorns their first lead of the game, 10-7.
Minutes before the halftime whistle, a Pronghorn line out was received by fifth-year centre Abby Duguid, who would power past the Dinos backline for a try. With the Neudorf convert, the Pronghorns took a 17-7 lead into halftime.
Lethbridge would carry their momentum forward into the second half, with fourth-year Taber product Genna Wright scoring a try to push the Lethbridge lead to fifteen, 22-7.
A late Dinos try by third-year centre
Grace Campbell made for an interesting final few minutes, with the 'Horns ultimately prevailing.
The Dinos will return home to McMahon Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 16 to face the Alberta Pandas. The Pronghorns will travel to the west coast to finish their season, with a Thursday tilt against the UBC Thunderbirds, followed by their regular-season finale against the Victoria Vikes.
