CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos will settle for a weekend split against their crosstown rival following a 3-2 setback versus the Mount Royal University Cougars on Saturday evening.
The Cougars looked for revenge following a 7-6 loss to the Dinos the night earlier. Mount Royal had surrendered a three-goal lead and allowed four Calgary tallies in the final frame.
While the Dinos managed to make it a one-goal game late on Saturday, the Cougars held on for the win this time.
Calgary will be looking to improve on their power play following missed chances over the weekend.
"Our power play was decent last night, but tonight we went 0-for-7, if our power play puts one or two in, it's a completely different game," said Dinos head coach
Mark Howell.
A fast-paced first period saw lots of opportunities but no scoring until the final five minutes. The Dinos opened the scoring at 15:31 of the frame, four seconds after the conclusion of their third power play when
Noah King fired a shot from the right hash marks that was tipped in by
Josh Maser. The Cougars tied it up two minutes later, with their captain, Tyson Helgesen releasing a shot through a crowd to beat Dinos goaltender
Tyler Gutenberg.
Mount Royal scored two minutes into the second period to take their first lead of the game when Lane Gilliss tipped a shot from Spencer Moe past Gutenberg.
The Cougars increased their lead at 7:14 of the final period as Levi Kleiboer snuck the puck past Gutenberg on the near side.
The Dinos pulled their goalie with three minutes remaining in the game. Mount Royal netminder Riley Sims could not cover up a shot which created a scrum in front where
Ryan Graham was able to poke the puck in, bringing the Dinos within one.
The Cougars were able to withstand the Dinos chances in the remaining time to hold on to a 3-2 win.
"I thought we were good tonight but good is not good enough, the margin for error in this league is really small. I thought this was our best weekend so far," said Howell.
The Dinos will head north next weekend to take on the MacEwan Griffins in Edmonton. Game time will be on Friday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 6 at 8 p.m.
Mount Royal enters a bye week before returning to action on Nov. 12 versus the Alberta Golden Bears.
