Dinos flip the script in Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE – In another battle to the final horn, the University of Calgary Dinos pulled out a 76-75 win over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday evening.

After the thriller of Friday night, a one-point win by Lethbridge, it was inevitable that these teams would be battling right to the end. Tied 60-60 at the mid-way point of the fourth quarter, the crowd at the 1st Choice Savings Center would once again be treated to a frantic finish.

With various contributions from the Pronghorns in the final five minutes, it was Noah Wharton for the Dinos who kept his team afloat. Three three-pointers from Wharton in 90 seconds would match basket after basket from the Pronghorns. With the score at 74-73 for the 'Horns, Moreau Darlington would draw a foul following a hard drive into the paint. After splitting his charity shots to put the home side up 75-73, it was rookie guard Aidan Smith of the Dinos who converted on a three-pointer in what turned into the game-winning bucket.

The Dinos were led by Wharton with 18 points, nine of those coming in the final two minutes to secure the victory for Calgary. Smith added 14 points off the bench, with Mason Foreman scoring 12.

The Pronghorns saw valuable contributions across their lineup, with four players recording double digits in points. Shae Gibb led the 'Horns with 15 points, while Chad Oviatt, Angelo Mbituyimana, and Darlington would chip in 12, 11, and 10 points respectively.

The first quarter saw both teams continue the frenetic pace which defined the action Friday night. The 'Horns would take a 19-17 lead into the second quarter.

After turning over the ball six times in the first quarter, the Dinos would clean up their game, with only two turnovers in the second. This allowed the Dinos offence to begin to find a rhythm, outscoring the 'Horns 19-14 to take a 36-33 lead into halftime.

The Dinos began to exert their physicality early in the third quarter, taking a 46-40 lead. The 'Horns would fight back, with Mbituyimana leading the charge. Closing the gap to 46-45, the teams would trade baskets to finish the quarter, with the Dinos up 52-51.

The fourth quarter would once again see a spectacular finish, with the Dinos earning the one-point win – the same margin they had lost the night before.

The Pronghorns will travel up the QE2 next weekend for a two-game series against the Alberta Golden Bears. Friday tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m., with Saturday action set to start at 7:00 p.m. The Dinos will enter a bye week, returning to action Nov. 12-13.
