CALGARY – Holly Reuther's second-period goal proved to be the game-winner as the University of Calgary Dinos knocked off the MacEwan University Griffins 3-1 for the second consecutive night at Father David Bauer Arena.
With the win on Saturday night, the Dinos improve to 2-2-0 on the young season, while the Griffins fall to 1-3-0.
Fourth-year defenceman
Emily Hill opened the scoring 13 minutes into the game as she took a pass from
Alli Borrow, showed patience, and blasted a shot through a sea of bodies.
The Griffins nearly tied the game late in the middle frame when Kallie O'Hearn rang a shot off the post. Moments later, at the other end of the ice, Reuther stepped off the bench and went straight to the net where she scored her second goal of the season.
Halfway through the third period, MacEwan cut Calgary's lead in half. Chantal Ricker recorded her second goal of the season on the power play, redirecting a point shot by Kyrelle Skoye.
With strong play by both goaltenders, the score remained tight until the final minutes when
Elizabeth Lang netted her second goal of the season to restore the Dinos' two-goal advantage and round out the scoring.
Second-year Calgary goaltender
Gabriella Durante stopped 28 of the 29 shots she faced. Brianna Sank made 31 saves on 34 attempts for the Griffins.
After the game, Durante turned her attention to next weekend's matchup.
"We are pretty fired up and coming in with a lot of motivation," said Durante, referring to games against the Mount Royal Cougars and a playoff rematch.
The Dinos will open next weekend at home against Mount Royal on Friday, Oct. 29 before action shifts to Seven Chiefs Sportsplex at Tsuut'ina Nation. MacEwan returns to Edmonton next weekend to host the UBC Thunderbirds.
