CALGARY – The Canada West playoff picture changed on Saturday, but it didn't become any clearer.
The MacEwan University Griffins defeated the University of Calgary Dinos 1-0 at Dinosaur Field. The win sees the Griffins leapfrog the Saskatchewan Huskies and into the final playoff spot in the Canada West's Central Division ahead of the regular-season finale on Sunday.
Calgary falls for the first time this season, having set a new program record with eight games undefeated to begin the season. The Dinos are now tied with the Alberta Golden Bears for second in the division and will be competing for a home playoff date on Sunday.
Heavy rain deteriorated the playing conditions for both sides, leading to few quality scoring chances. The only goal of the afternoon came in the 33rd minute, as a shot by Stefan Gajic deflected off a Dinos defender, catching goalkeeper
Jake Ruschkowski off-guard and unable to recover. The goal was Gajic's third of the season, with Ali Yildiz recording the assist.
The Dinos outshot the Griffins 11-6, but only managed to get four shots on goal – all of which were handled by Josh Stayko. At the other end, Ruschkowski finished the game with three saves.
The final day of the regular season will decide the playoff fates for both the Dinos and Griffins. They will match up again at Dinosaur Field on Sunday at 2:15 p.m.
