EDMONTON – Montana Leonard added two more to her Canada West-leading goal tally Saturday afternoon as the University of Calgary Dinos picked up a 3-2 win over the Alberta Pandas at Foote Field.
With her 13th and 14th goals of the campaign, Leonard became the Dinos' all-time leading goal scorer with 33 and set a new program record with 14 goals in a single season. With three games still to play, Leonard sits in a tie for second on the all-time Canada West list for single-season goals, two back of Janine Frazao's record 16 (UBC, 2011).
Calgary improves to 7-1-1 on the campaign with the victory, clinching a playoff spot in the process.
Leonard got the offence fired up early for the Dinos, scoring both her tallies in the opening eight minutes of the contest.
Laura Kautz drew the assists on both goals in the third and eighth minutes. Alberta got one back courtesy Wanda Czebreszuk before the end of the opening half, and the visitors took a 2-1 lead into the break.
Captain
Damiane Van Wieren scored the eventual game-winner in the 76th for the Dinos, capitalizing on an Alberta miscue to post Calgary's third of the afternoon. In the dying moments, the Pandas managed to pull within one when Czebreszuk found McKayla Brault, but that's as close as Alberta would get as the Dinos picked up the 3-2 victory.
The Dinos doubled up the Pandas in shots, 20-10, forcing Alberta 'keeper Ashley Turner to make 11 saves. In the Calgary goal,
Lauren Houghton made four saves to post the win.
The Dinos wrap up their two-match trip to Edmonton with another tilt against the Pandas Sunday, with kickoff at 12 p.m. live on CanadaWest.tv presented by Co-op.
