OTTAWA – The University of Calgary Dinos got big performances from their fifth-year players in the final U SPORTS game of their careers Saturday, winning the consolation side of the draw at the 2020 national championship with a 66-61 win over host Carleton.
The Dinos finish the season 27-5 against U SPORTS teams and fifth in the nation, having lost their quarter-final by just a single point.
Liene Stalidzane had 19 points and two assists for Calgary, with
Bobbi-Jo Colburn and Erin McINtosh adding 15 points each. Madison Reid had 20 points and three rebounds in a losing cause for Carleton.
The Dinos trailed 22-17 after the first quarter, but enjoyed a nine-point edge heading into half time.
"We didn't set a particularly good tone from the start, but we reacted well and that's a testimony to our girls," said Dinos head coach
Damian Jennings. "I'm very proud of the way we stayed resilient, and then once we took the lead it was enough to say it was our game.
McIntosh's 15 points led the way for the seniors, while
Sascha Lichtenwald led the Dinos with six rebounds on the day.
Michaela Nieuwenhuizen also had a solid outing, grabbing a couple of key rebounds down the stretch.
"Michaela had to wrestle with some foul trouble but still came in and gave us a clinical, disciplined performance and clenched some wonderful rebounds. Between the three of them, and Anmol and her leadership, it has been an excellent ride."
Calgary shot 38.8 percent from the field and 31.8 percent from three, compared to Carleton's 33.8 percent shooting and 37 percent from beyond the arc.
