Dinos can't rally against Wesmen

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos showed resilience in the third set but could not complete a comeback, falling 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 26-28, 25-13) on Saturday night to the Winnipeg Wesmen at the Duckworth Centre.

The Winnipeg Wesmen shone on Senior Night and their playoff hopes are still very much alive because of it. Fifth-year right side Kalena Schulz had 11 kills and 11 digs and fellow senior Rylie Dickson had 45 assists.

The win put the Wesmen on the brink of their first playoff berth since 2012 and gave them their first nine-win season since 2012-2013.

A win next weekend at Mount Royal or a UBC-Okanagan loss to Calgary will solidify a post-season berth for the Wesmen.

The Dinos were led by Trinity Solecki's 19 kills and 14 digs. Kenzie Vaandering added 13 kills and 19 digs. Kennedy Snape added a match-high 20 digs.

After dropping consecutive sets 25-20 to open the evening, the Dinos found themselves in a battle during a contested third set. Winnipeg had multiple match points but couldn't close it out before a Wesmen attack error and a kill by Trinity Solecki allowed the Dinos to pull out an 28-26 win.

Unfortunately for Calgary, that would be their only set win of the night as the Wesmen dominated the fourth set, winning by 12 points.

The Dinos return home for the final weekend of the regular season where they will host the UBC Okanagan Heat. The action gets underway on Friday, Feb. 14 at the Jack Simpson Gym.
