CALGARY – On the strength of a 74-58 win over the Mount Royal Cougars Saturday night, the University of Calgary Dinos will be the top seed in the Canada West women's basketball playoffs.
The Dinos finish the regular season with an 18-2 record, tied with Saskatchewan with the league's best win-loss mark – and the program's best finish since going undefeated back in the 1989-90 season. On the strength of their schedule and RPI ranking, however, the Dinos will be the top seed when the playoffs get underway.
The Dinos will host the No. 4 University of Alberta Pandas, along with two other teams to be decided next week, in a 'semifinal four' the weekend of Feb. 20-23 (exact schedule to be confirmed). Calgary will face the lowest-seeded team to win in next week's play-in games featuring seeds five through 12 in one of two quarter-finals, with the winner advancing to the semifinal.
Saskatchewan will host the other mini-tournament, and the two winners from those two sites will play for the conference title – and earn Canada West's two automatic berths to the U SPORTS Final 8 in Ottawa.
Saturday night at MRU's Kenyon Court, the Dinos ran up a nine-point lead after the opening quarter and didn't look back, leading wire-to-wire to send the Cougars, who will miss the playoffs, into their offseason with a 5-15 record on the campaign.
Reyna Crawford led the way for the Dinos with 19 points Saturday night, while
Liene Stalidzane chipped in with 14. The Dinos out-rebounded their crosstown rivals by a 41-33 margin, and in the process clinched the Crowchild Classic overall title outright for the University of Calgary for the seventh time in its eight-year history.
