CALGARY – Another night, another win over Mount Royal, and another vintage performance by
Brett Layton.
The Dinos' MVP put up a 22-point, 22-rebound night on his former home court at MRU as Calgary cruised to an 87-66 win over the Cougars, wrapping up their regular season at 18-2 and earning the No. 2 seed in the Canada West playoffs.
The Dinos will host a second-round playoff tournament Feb. 21-23 in the Jack Simpson Gym (exact schedule to be announced), with the UBC Thunderbirds and two other teams yet to be decided coming to town. The winner of that weekend will advance to the conference championship game, and to the U SPORTS Final 8 in Ottawa – a tournament where the Dinos are looking to make a fifth consecutive appearance.
Layton's 22 rebounds on the night gives him 272 on the season, a school record and a Canada West record for a 20-game season. He finishes the year averaging 14.3 rebounds per night – again, a Canada West record.
Ezeoha Santiago (14 points),
Mason Foreman (11), and
Jackson Bayles (10) also broke double-digits in scoring for the Dinos, who dropped the Cougars' record to 3-17 on the season and sent them into their offseason after missing the playoffs.
