Dinos bounce back to grab spilt

WINNIPEG – The Calgary Dinos (6-6) hit a consistent 36 percent on Saturday night at Investors Group Athletic Centre, sweeping the Manitoba Bisons (6-6) 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-21) to earn a weekend split.

Outside hitter Mac McNicol led the way with 18 kills and a 62 percent attacking percentage for the Dinos while the Bisons were paced by 24 combined kills from Kevin Negus and Owen Schwartz.

Manitoba held a two-point lead for the vast majority of the first set, however the Dinos battled back late, scoring four of the last five points to take a 1-0 set lead that saw both teams hit above 40 percent.

The difference came in the middle, where the Dinos combined for six kills. Liam Laidlaw led the way with five of those, including a critical point to give his team a 22-21 lead that they didn't relinquish. The Bisons were once again paced by right side Kevin Negus — who had 27 kills the night before. Left side Owen Schwartz added six kills and a solo block.

After not seeing the court the night before, outside hitter Parker Siroishka came alive for Calgary towards the end of the first set and into the second. He was able to stymie Schwartz at the net at times, while also contributing three kills as the Dinos led 22-18 late in the second set.

"He did a great job," Dinos head coach Rod Durrant said of Siroishka — who finished with five kills and three total blocks.

"He's got a lot of confidence in him and he played very well tonight."

Manitoba — who hit 29 percent — battled back on the strength of Ben Carleton's play at the service line, however McNicol did him one better, ending set two with an ace of his own, along with 12 kills through two as Calgary continued to hit above 40 percent overall.

Manitoba got stuck in a tough rotation tied at nine in the third set and the Dinos capitalized, going on a four-point run that they carried the rest of the way. McNicol had two kills during that span, while setter Tomas Sorra added 11 assists and finished with 40 overall.

The Bisons got three kills from left side Jon Laube but Laube also had six service errors which occurred at key times.

Next up for the Bisons is a road tilt against Thompson Rivers, while Calgary is on the bye.
