CALGARY – A solid defensive effort and another dominant performance in the paint helped the third-ranked University of Calgary Dinos improve to 10-0 on the season with a 75-57 win over the UNBC Timberwolves Saturday night.
With both teams getting off to a slow start, having only five points scored between the teams in the first three minutes of play, it was the Dinos who started to get the juices flowing late in the first quarter and find their groove to pull ahead. Calgary took a 22-12 lead into the second quarter largely on the strength of
Edwin Jeudy, who went four-for-four from the field to finish the first quarter with a team-high seven points.
Heading into the half it was the Dinos smothering defense who held UNBC to just 13 points in the second stanza, with 10 of those coming from Tyrell Laing.
With the Dinos leading the way after the first half it was the Timberwolves who brought the energy to push back against the pressing Dinos. With a barrage of baskets across the Timberwolves roster it was UNBC who outscored the Dinos 18-15 in the third.
Heading into the fourth quarter with a healthy lead the Dinos continued to attack the Timberwolves on all fronts outscoring them 16-11 to close out the weekend.
The Dinos again were dominant on the glass, recording 45 rebounds to UNBC's 30 – with
Brett Layton picking up another 14 boards after a 24-rebound effort Friday. That led to the Dinos attempting 15 more shots than the visitors. Layton was also the Dinos' leading scorer with 21 points.
Mason Foreman added a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while
Ezeoha Santiago had a 15-point night.
Laing's 18 points paced UNBC in a losing cause, with Vova Pluzhnikov chipping in with eight. The Timberwolves struggled with ball control on the night, committing 23 turnovers compared to just 11 for the Dinos.
The Dinos head into a home-and-home with the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns next week, beginning Thursday at home with an 8 p.m. tip-off. UNBC heads back home to Prince George to host Fraser Valley next weekend.
