Dinos grab a point in double-overtime

CALGARY – Breanne Trotter scored at 2:51 of double-overtime to secure a 2-1 win for the Mount Royal University Cougars over the Calgary Dinos on Friday at the Flames Community Arenas.

Trotter was supported by Kate Hufnagel, who opened the scoring in the game, while goaltender Kaitlyn Ross stoppped 22 shots for the win.

Sara Craven picked up the lone Dinos goal, while Kelsey Roberts turned away 33 of 35 chances.

The first period was a tough battle for control of the ice with neither side letting up. Mount Royal was finding more opportunities on net but were thwarted by Roberts. They were unable to break the stalemate by the final buzzer, ending with no goals on the board.

Just three minutes into the second, Mount Royal's Hufnagel received a quick pass from Kennedy Bozek and swept the puck past Roberts. The Dinos responded quickly with some shots of their own but were unable to beat Kaitlyn Ross in the middle frame.  The Dinos finally found the back of the net thanks to a friendly bounce off the backboards. A dump in by Merissa Dawson fooled the Mount Royal netminder, leaving an empty cage for Craven to score on.

After a round of four-on-four failed to settle the score, the game slipped into double overtime. During the fifth period, Trotter won a battle in the corner and took the puck to the net with no defenders around her and beat Roberts.

Calgary closes out the regular season next weekend with a home-and-home set with the Lethbridge Pronghorns, while Mount Royal hosts the UBC Thunderbirds.
