EDMONTON – Three first-period goals, coupled with a 29-save performance from starter
Brodan Salmond was enough to power the visiting Calgary Dinos to a 5-2 win over the No. ranked Alberta Golden Bears on Friday night.
Calgary (15-6-2) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes, adding another two goals in the third, as they handed Alberta (19-4-0) just their fourth conference loss of the season. The win is also the first for Calgary over their provincial foes, who dropped the first two meetings this season.
The Dinos were outshot 31-19, but were able to capitalize on their chances, scoring five on Bears starter Brendan Burke.

Matt Alfaro,
Ryan Graham and
Tim Vanstone scored for the Dinos, who were able to snap their three-game losing streak.
Noah Philp and Cole Sanford scored for Alberta, who lost just their second game in 2020. They now hold just a two-point lead over Saskatchewan for tops in Canada West, with the Dinos sitting six points back.
Elder, Cook and Alfaro scored for the Dinos in the opening period, as they were able to score three goals on just eight shots. Alberta mustered just eight shots of their own, all of which were turned aside by Salmond in a strong opening period.
The Bears finally broke through in the second, with Philp and Sanford each scoring in the frame.
However, the momentum generated by Alberta in the second was snuffed out by their lack of discipline, which saw them take eight penalties on Friday night. Five of those minor penalties came in the third, including a double minor by Trevor Cox for high-sticking.
Calgary took advantage of the Bears trips to the box, with Graham doubling the Dinos lead early off a gaff by Burke. Vanstone sealed the win with his 5th of the season in the final minute.
The two rivals will finish their weekend series tomorrow night, as the Dinos host the Bears at 6:00 p.m. at Father David Bauer Arena.
