Shorthanded, Dinos find a way in Winnipeg

WINNIPEG – The Calgary Dinos were down a four-man and a Foreman, but still found a way to win No. 14.

The No. 2-ranked Dinos, playing without starting forward Mason Foreman, got 16 points and 17 rebounds to pull away for a 75-51 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen in a Canada West men's basketball contest Saturday at the Duckworth Centre.

Foreman, who averages better than 19 points per game, sat on the bench with an illness, but the Dinos managed to seal the game with a 21-6 fourth quarter after the Wesmen hung around in striking distance for most of the contest.

Don Dayrit had 14 points off the bench to lead the Wesmen. Narcisse Ambanza had 13 points and six rebounds, and Will Sesay added 10 and eight.

Calgary improved to 14-0 on the season, while the Wesmen dropped to 6-8.

Simon Kutzschmar, who replaced Foreman in the starting lineup, had 11 points. Calgary was led by Brett Layton's 16 points and 17 rebounds.

"Our timing and some of the things that we normally do is a bit off (without Foreman)," Calgary head coach Dan Vanhooren said. "To have Simon go in there and play the way he did in that position I thought was great. And we got some great contributions from some other guys, so I'm very, very pleased with our team's effort and what they did today. I think it says a lot about the team's character."

The Dinos shot 29 free throws to Winnipeg's 11.

Ezeoha Santiago led the Dinos with a game-high 24 points on 9-for-13 shooting.

The Dinos remain on the road next weekend as they head to Saskatoon for a two-game series against the Saskatchewan Huskies Friday and Saturday night.
