Dinos win battle of streaking teams

WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Wesmen ran into one of the hottest teams in the country and their winning streak hit the end of the road in the process.

The No. 2-ranked Calgary Dinos opened the game on an 11-0 run and never looked back in posting an 86-52 Canada West conference women's basketball victory Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.

The Wesmen saw their six-game win streak snapped, while Calgary (13-0) won its 28th straight conference game to remain tied atop the Canada West. Liene Stalidzane and Sascha Lichtenwald led Calgary with 12 points each and Bobbi-Jo Colbourn had 11.

Anna Kernaghan had a game-high 13 points — including 4-for-5 from three — to lead the Wesmen (8-5). Jillian Duncan added 11.

The Dinos won the rebounding battle 45-31.

Calgary also shot 10-for-23 from three, which enabled the visitors to jump out to a 49-22 lead at the half.

"Certainly the first half we did shoot the ball particularly well," Calgary head coach Damian Jennings said. "Offensively I thought we transitioned pretty quickly, we found some good gaps off some decent pick action and from that we were able to find in-to-out kind of shots as well as back cuts and some other options. We were pretty sloppy in the first half as far as finishing and provided Winnipeg, who obviously transitions well themselves, some much easier looks. All and all, that was a decent performance."

The two teams meet again Saturday at 7 p.m. CT.
