EDMONTON – For the second-straight game, the No.7 University of Alberta Golden Bears were upset by a provincial rival, this time losing a 3-1 decision to the Calgary Dinos, Sunday afternoon at Foote Field.
Calgary improves to 3-2-0, getting tallies from third-year forwards
Frederik Hansen and
Dominik Zuczek as well as third-year midfielder
Jeff Spolnik. Zuczek's fourth marker of the season keeps him tied for the conference lead.
Sophomore midfielder David Chung scored the lone goal for the home team, Alberta dropping to 1-2-1 on the season.
The win was Calgary's first against Alberta since 2015. It was also just the fourth time the Dinos have beaten the Golden Bears on their home field.
The Dinos opened the scoring early, senior midfielder
Jared Fillo lobbing a ball into the box where Hansen headed it over Alberta sophomore goaltender Chris Ezoua and into the net for a 1-0 lead only 2 minutes into the match.
Calgary continued the offensive pressure for another 20 minutes before the Bears finally started to earn some ground in the Dinos' zone.
It would take until the 68th minute, however, before Alberta could make it count, Chung firing his first goal of the season off the far post to even the game at 1-1.
Unfortunately, the balance on the scoreboard was short-lived, Zuczek getting the ball off a turnover in the 71st minute and, although Ezoua managed to get a small piece, the strong momentum of the shot carried it into the back of the net for the 2-1 lead.
The Bears tried to earn another equalizer in the final minutes, but the Dinos kept them to the outside before Spolnik notched the insurance marker just into injury time by chipping the ball off an Alberta defender before it trickled past Ezoua.
The Edmonton native kept the score at 3-1 in the dying moments of the match though, making two incredible stops on Cristiano de Carvalho and Zuzcek before the referee blew the final whistle.
Calgary heads to British Columbia next weekend to square off against Fraser Valley and Trinity Western while Alberta also heads west to face off against Victoria and UBC Okanagan.
