Dinos drop first at home, 4-2 to Victoria

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos dropped their first home game of the season 4-2 to the University of Victoria Vikes on Sunday afternoon at Dinosaur Field.

The Vikes put on sustained pressure on the Dinos defence early in the game and were rewarded when Jack Hill opened the scoring in the seventh after receiving a cross feed in front of the net by Isaac Koch.

Koch extended the Vikes lead on a penalty kick 20 minutes after the opening goal, firing the ball just to the left of the Dinos netminder Jake Ruschkowski. The Victoria rookie Daniel Roke fired home the third goal of the matchup in the 39th minute after an offside call was overturned, giving the Vikes a 3-0 lead heading into the half.

Playing without leading Dominik Zuczek, a more aggressive Dinos team entered the second half of play down by three, coming out strong with the better chances of the two teams but unable to get through the Victoria defence. Decklin Mahmi finally got the Dinos on the board after firing a shot from the right side of the field past the Vikes netminder Jas Lally in the 57th minute.

The Dinos continued putting on the pressure and narrowed the Vikes' lead to 3-2 six minutes later, as Sam Gagne received a cross feed pass from Mark Bohdan and executed a diving header to knock the ball past Lally.

The Dinos limited the Vikes' chances to a minimum during the second half of play, but Victoria leading scorer Ian Whibley fired his sixth goal of the season past Ruschkowski to put the game out of reach.

Calgary falls to 5-4-0 on the season as Victoria improves to 5-3-1.

After enjoying a bye next week, Victoria will face off at home against the Pacific Division-leading UBC Okanagan Heat on Oct. 5. The Dinos, meanwhile, welcome Alberta and MacEwan to Dinosaur Field next Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
