Leonard, Mikuska tally as Dinos blank Cougars

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos maintained their undefeated record Friday afternoon, picking up a tidy 2-0 win over their crosstown rivals from Mount Royal University at Dinosaur Field.

In the first of two clashes between local squads, the Dinos took control in the second half after a tightly-played first. Calgary held an 8-1 shot advantage after the break, scoring both tallies in the second 45 to improve to 4-0-1 on the young campaign, taking for the moment sole possession of first place in the Pacific Division. Mount Royal, meanwhile, continues to search for its first goal of the season, falling to 0-5-0.

"It was a fight, and we had to match their intensity and their work rate," said Dinos Head Coach Troye Flannery. "Once the game settled down, we started to look more like ourselves. It was a professional performance overall based on what we were up against. Happy with the two goals and the clean sheet, we'll take it."

Montana Leonard finally broke through for Calgary in the 54th minute, pressuring the MRU defenders and goalkeeper Katrina Greenley in the box before pouncing on a loose rebound to pot her Canada West-leading sixth goal of the season.

In the 69th minute, Taylor Wells was taken down heavily in the box, leading to a penalty kick for the Dinos. Amy Mikuska made no mistake on the opportunity, scoring her second of the year to give the Dinos a 2-0 lead.

Calgary 'keeper Lauren Houghton picked up her third clean sheet in as many games for the Dinos, needing to make just one save. For the Cougars, Greenley faced 10 shots on goal and made eight saves in the losing effort.

Mount Royal heads to Prince George, B.C. for a Sunday contest against the UNBC Timberwolves, while the Dinos will wait for Sunday to welcome the Lethbridge Pronghorns to Dinosaur Field. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
