Shearer sends Dinos into December with sweep

CALGARY – After coming away with a win in the shootout on Friday evening, he University of Calgary men's hockey team wrapped up 2019 portion of its schedule with a sweep of the Regina Cougars, beating them 4-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Robbie Fisher and Mitch Cook had a goal each on the night and James Shearer scored the eventual game winner late in the third to give his side the win.

The scoring got going just over midway through the first. Robbie Fisher battled for the puck behind the Cougars net with a pair of defencemen before making his way out front and firing a backhand through the pads of the Regina netminder for his first of the year and the early Dinos lead.

The Cougars responded in the second when Landon Peel evaded a sliding Sahvan Khaira with a toe drag before roofing it on Tyler Gutenberg also for his first goal of the Canada West campaign.

Mitch Cook would regain the Dinos lead shortly after the Regina opening tally. Ryan Graham made his way through traffic down the right side and made his way towards the goal. Cook set himself up in perfect territory for him to pick up and bury the rebound for the 2-1 lead heading into the final period.

The third period saw some fireworks as a late Regina Cougars goal looked like it was going to push the game into overtime for the second night in a row. James Shearer had other ideas when he buried a cross crease pass from Kaden Elder to make it 3-2.

Tim Vanstone put the dagger in the Cougars with a last-second empty netter to secure the Dinos victory.

"This gives us a lot of confidence and a lot of things to look forward to heading into Christmas break," Robbie Fisher said of his team's mindset heading into December.

Tyler Gutenberg stopped 16 of the 18 shots he faced while on the other end, Brandon Holtby made 30 stops.

The Dinos will take the month long rest and get prepared for the second half of the season. They return to the ice on Jan. 3 in Vancouver against the UBC Thunderbirds. Regina will host Lethbridge for a two-game series Jan. 3-4.
