Dinos do it again, complete sweep of Pandas

CALGARY – After a solid performance Friday, the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team didn't show any signs of slowing down on Saturday evening, coming away with a 4-2 win against the University of Alberta Pandas.

Paige Michalenko and Brooke Dennett both scored their first goals of the seasons while Elizabeth Lang provided some support with her fifth of the campaign. Rebecca Clarke also added her second goal with the net vacant for Alberta.

Holly Ruether looked to open the scoring early with a couple of good chances only to be denied by the glove of Pandas goaltender Halle Oswald.

After exchanging opportunities, it was the Dinos who were able to get the opening tally. Michalenko had the puck all alone at the point before firing it through traffic. After a couple deflections from the crowd in front of the net, the puck found its way through to give the Dinos a 1-0 lead.

It wasn't long after that the Pandas responded. Payton Laumbach was able to take advantage of a Dinos defender who lost their footing and put it through Kelsie Roberts to knot the game at one a piece.

With just minutes left in the second period, Dennett got in tight to the Pandas goal and slid on under Oswald to regain the lead.

It took under 20 seconds for the Dinos to get on the board in the third period when Elizabeth Lang was sprung in all alone on the breakaway and undressed the Pandas goaltender with a back hand roofer.

Despite the Pandas cutting into the lead with five minutes left, the Dinos were able keep the puck away from their defensive territory thanks to a late penalty to the Pandas.

"It's not often that you sweep a great team like Alberta," Lang said about her team's weekend. "It gives us a lot confidence going forward into the next few weekends."

Kelsie Roberts made 34 stops while at the other end of the rink, Oswald turned away 14 shots.

The Dinos will get a break next weekend as they take their bye week before returning to the ice on Nov.14 for the first meeting with Crowchild Classic foes Mount Royal, while Alberta will head to Regina.
