Cougars edge Dinos in double overtime

CALGARY – Chris Gerrie scored the game-winning goal at 4:21 of double overtime as the Mount Royal University Cougars defeated the Calgary Dinos 5-4 at the Flames Community Arenas.

The Cougars held three one-goal leads at home on Thursday but could not put away the Dinos until the fifth period. Connor Black (1g, 1a), Brad Kennedy (2a), and Mitch Lipon (1g, 1a) had two-point nights for Mount Royal, while Coda Gordon (1g, 1a) was the top point-getter for Calgary in the loss. The Dinos scored the first goal of the night halfway through the first period as Ryan Graham found the back of the net,  building off a strong weekend last week versus Alberta.

Before the first period could end, Jamal Watson tied the score with a goal at the 15:35 mark. Blake gave Mount Royal their first lead of the evening two minutes into the second period. Tim Vanstone evened the score a few minutes later, but a goal by Jesse Lees at the 13:29 mark gave the Cougars the advantage heading into the third period. The Dinos and Cougars traded goals in the opening minutes of the third. Jordan Xavier tied the game 3-3, but Lipon responded 10 seconds later. Gordon's goal at the 4:21 mark knotted the score for a fourth time, sending the game to overtime.

Once the game reached three-on-three play in double overtime, Gerrie wasted little time ending it with an unassisted goal 39 seconds in.

The two teams will face off again tomorrow with a 7 p.m. puck drop from the Father David Bauer Arena.
