CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos' quest for a fourth consecutive conference title takes them south this weekend for the Canada West Championship at the University of Lethbridge Community Stadium.
The Dinos will face the host Lethbridge Pronghorns in their semifinal on Friday at 1 p.m., with the other semi featuring the UBC Thunderbirds and Victoria Vikes. The winners of both semifinals will advance to Sunday's championship final and earn a trip to the U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championship in Ottawa.
FAMILIAR FACES
Friday's semifinal between the Dinos and Pronghorns is the third between the two teams in the past five weeks. The Dinos and 'Horns met for the first time on Sept. 21 in Lethbridge where Calgary came away with a 27-17 win. Last weekend, Calgary hosted the Pronghorns and won 22-5 at Shouldice Park.
SCORING LEADERS
The Dinos entered this season without
Taejah Thompson, who led the conference in scoring with nine tries and 45 points in 2018 and have had to find other sources of offence.
Cassidy Jones led the team with four tries, while
Julia Omokhuale picked up a pair last weekend to finish with three. Canada West was led this season by UBC's Shoshanah Seumanutafa who scored seven tries with 57 points.
FLASHBACK
The last time the Canada West Championship was held in Lethbridge was in 2016 – the beginning of the Dinos' reign atop the conference. That year, the Dinos had an undefeated 4-0 regular season heading into the conference's final four where they defeated Lethbridge 50-12 and the Victoria Vikes 29-14 to claim the program's first banner. Two weeks later the Dinos travelled to Victoria for their first national championship where they earned a bronze medal.
