CALGARY – Fresh off their first weekend sweep of the season, the University of Calgary Dinos will look to extend their win streak during a pair of crucial games versus the Winnipeg Wesmen this weekend at the Jack Simpson Gym.
Action gets underway beginning on Friday with game time scheduled for 7:30 p.m., followed by a 5:30 p.m. start on Saturday.
CARRYING MOMENTUM
The Dinos have won their last two games in Canada West competition after beating the UBC Okanagan Heat twice last weekend, but their win streak goes beyond that. Calgary returned to play early after Christmas as they travelled to Kamloops, B.C. for two non-conference games and an exhibition contest. The Dinos won the tournament with wins against the UBC Thunderbirds, Thompson Rivers Wolfpack and Sungkyunkwan University, based out of Korea.
Rod Durrant's squad has two wins on its home floor this season, including their last home game on Nov. 24 against the Manitoba Bisons.
TOO CLOSE TO CALL
This weekend's two-game set at the Jack Simpson Gym holds major implications in the standings for both the Dinos and Wesmen. Both teams come into the weekend with 5-7 records in Canada West play and are fending off teams sitting outside the playoff picture. The two teams currently sit in postseason positions, but if the season were to end prior to this weekend, Winnipeg would finish ahead of Calgary based on record in sets won/lost.
KILLER INSTINCT
Fourth-year outside hitter
Tim Taylor was a major influence on the Dinos' sweep of the Heat last weekend in Kelowna. The Sydney, Australia native posted 28 kills in only six sets, including 18 on Saturday. Those numbers moved Taylor among the conference's elite offensive players, placing him fourth in kills per set at 3.71 and 10th in kills with 152.
