BOX SCORE
RED DEER, Alta. – The Calgary offence scored early and often, running out to a big early lead as the Dinos held on for a 50-38 win over the Alberta Golden Bears in non-conference action Wednesday night at Great Chief Park.
Adam Sinagra found
Hunter Karl for an 85-yard touchdown on the game's first play as the Dinos offence completed its first 11 consecutive passes, racking up 338 yards en route to a 33-7 lead after 15 minutes. Sinagra found Karl again just over five minutes after the first TD for a 47-yard major score, with
Dallas Boath and
Josiah Joseph each adding touchdowns before the first quarter was up.
"In the first quarter our offence was really rolling. The defence got the ball back to them and they were able to put the ball into the back of the end zone every time and that was good to see," said Calgary Head Coach
Wayne Harris. "We even brought in some of the second-team guys and they continued to put up a lot of points really quick in that first half."
From there, both teams cycled through their rosters with young players getting an opportunity to gain valuable experience with the speed of the U SPORTS game.
Matson Tulloch and
Adre Simmonds accounted for the remaining two Calgary touchdowns on the night, with the Dinos rotating through five quarterbacks while four Bears pivots saw action.
"The young guys got to learn the speed of the game and it is a big transition from high school," said Harris. "You can talk all you want until you experience it. Alberta has some good young receivers with a lot of speed and they took advantage of some of our guys and got back into the game."
Rookie
Tyson Philpot led all Dinos with three catches on the night, rumbling for 119 yards, while Karl's two receptions both went for touchdowns and a total of 128 yards.
The two-time defending Canada West champion Dinos open the 2018 season for real next week when they visit the Regina Rams Friday, Aug. 31 at Mosaic Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. MT, live on TELUS 997/998 and CanadaWest.tv. Calgary's home opener goes a week later when UBC visits McMahon Stadium for KICKOFF XIII Sept. 7 at 5:30 p.m.
