First-place Dinos host Griffins

CALGARY - The University of Calgary Dinos women's volleyball team hosts the MacEwan Griffins on Friday, Feb. 9, with an 11 a.m. start time, before facing them again on Saturday, Feb. 10 with the first serve at 12 p.m.

Over 1000 grade school students from Calgary are expected to be in attendance at the Jack Simpson Gym on Friday afternoon as the Dinos host their annual School Day game. The next day, the Dinos will host Seniors' Day and will recognize the team's four fifth-year players.

Calgary currently ranks first in the Canada West standings and has secured a playoff spot, sporting a 17-3 overall record with 34 points. The team is averaging 12.21 kills per set and a .224 hitting percentage. Playoffs will not be a reality for the Griffins this season, as they stand at 2-18 with 4 points, noting an average 9.94 kills per set in 20 matches, and a .133 hitting percentage.

The Dinos were last in action last weekend at home where they picked up two important wins over the Trinty Western Spartans. On the backend of that weekend set, the Dinos succeeded in five sets, with final tallies reading 25-14, 15-25, 27-25, 16-25, and 15-10. Kate Pexman led Calgary with a school-record of 29 kills and 18 digs during the contest, while Beth Vinnell recorded 14 kills and four blocks. Laura McManes earned 10 kills and six digs, supported by Brianna Solberg who notched five kills, an ace and a block. 

The Griffins fell to No. 7 Brandon in their last game, 3-1, dropping to 2-18 overall. Cassidy Kinsella led the charge recording 11 kills, and nine digs, while Claire McLoughlin chipped in two kills and 30 assists. Haley Gilfillan and Hailey Cornelis grabbed seven and five kills, respectively. McKenna Stevenson made the biggest difference for MacEwan, as she registered a career-best 10 blocks – tying the fifth-best mark in a Canada West game in school history. She added eight kills on a .389 hitting percentage.
