SASKATOON – It heartbreaking end to the season for the University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team.
After fighting back from a 6-4 loss in Game 1 Thursday night to send the series the distance, the Dinos'
Logan Fisher tied up Game 3 at 1-1 midway through the third period and the series looked to be headed to sudden death. With just 24 seconds left in the period, however, the Saskatchewan's Carson Stadnyk took a pass at the blue line and lifted a shot past Dinos netminder
Jordan Papirny to send the Huskies to the Canada West final. An empty-netter ended it 3-1 in the home side's favour.
Chris Collins had three goals to lead the Dinos in the series, with Fisher,
Brayden Sherbinin,
Riley Sheen, and
Adam Kambeitz each tallying once.
Coming into the series mid-way through Game 1, Papirny was brilliant for the Dinos, including a 29 save effort on Saturday.
The Game 3 loss marked the final game in the university careers of Collins, Sherbinin, Kambeitz, and defencemen
Dan Gibb and
Drydn Dow.
With the win, the Huskies take the best-of-three semifinal series 2-1 and advance to the Canada West final next weekend for the third straight season. The win also books a trip to the University Cup hosted by the UNB Varsity Reds in Fredericton, N.B.
The Huskies travel to Edmonton to meet the Alberta Golden Bears in the best of three Canada West Final starting March 2.
