ABBOTSFORD, B.C. – The Victoria Vikes continued their dominance of the Canada West Women's Sevens Series, going a perfect 6-0 en route to the tourney title at the second stop on the circuit, hosted by the University of the Fraser Valley.
The University of Calgary Dinos remain in hot pursuit, sitting second in the overall team standings with 14 points heading into the final weekend of competition in Victoria. Calgary went 4-2 on the weekend, with big wins over Fraser Valley, Thompson Rivers, Lethbridge, and Alberta, along with tight, two-point losses to both UBC and Victoria.
The Dinos opened the weekend with a 22-10 win over Alberta, coming back from a 10-5 deficit early in the second half. In the second match-up, a lone convert by the Vikes was enough to lift Victoria over the Dinos by a 17-15 score. Calgary rebounded from that setback to score a dominant 56-0 win over Fraser Valley to wrap up Day 1.
Sunday, the Dinos opened with a 19-10 win over Lethbridge before falling 19-17 to UBC, with a convert once again the difference. Again, the Dinos bounced back with a big shutout win, defeating Thompson Rivers 53-0.
In the overall standings, the Vikes (20 points) hold the lead, with Calgary (14) and Lethbridge (12) their closest pursuers.
