Cougars salvage split against Dinos

CALGARY – Challenged by the University of Calgary Dinos all night, the Mount Royal Cougars scored late in the third to even their weekend set with a 3-2 win at the Flames Community Arenas on Saturday.

The Cougars were looking to respond after dropping a 3-2 decision to the Dinos on Friday.

Three penalties were given to the Cougars within the first period and following the second penalty, there was a complete scramble at the Cougars net, where goalie Zoe De Beauville barely stopped a wandering puck. Despite numerous opportunities for Calgary, the first period left both teams hungry with a 0- 0 outcome.

The Cougars continued their strong power play work on Saturday as they opened the scoring in the second period. With Laine Grace sitting in the box, Breanne Trotter added to her team-leading scoring totals to make it 1-0. With a minute and a half left, De Beauville made a fantastic save, but the Dinos came back again with just 50 seconds on the clock and tied the game with a goal by Elizabeth Lang to close out the second period.

After relentless attacks on both sides of the ice, Mount Royal took the lead with a goal from Tatum Amy at the 14:33 mark. With a minute and a half left of the game, Dinos goalie Kelsey Roberts left the ice to but the extra attacker wasn't enough and Mount Royal hung on to win 2-1.

Calgary slips to 1-8-1 on the season, while Mount Royal moves ahead by six points with a 3-6-1 record.

The Dinos are at home next weekend for a pair of games against the Regina Cougars on Nov. 16 and 17.
